Responsible Ownership

Choosing a companion animal is a long commitment. These considerations apply before any enquiry.

Lifespan

Small dogs and cats commonly live well beyond a decade, and some parrots live for many decades. Plan for the animal's whole life, including who would care for it if your circumstances change.

Heat and climate

Saudi summers are severe. Flat-faced breeds, heavy-coated breeds and birds are especially vulnerable. Indoor cooling, shade, fresh water and limited midday activity are essentials, not extras.

Time and enrichment

Dogs need daily exercise and company, cats need stimulation, and many birds need hours of interaction. Consider how long the animal would be alone each day.

Veterinary care

Budget for vaccinations, parasite control, routine checks and unexpected illness. Locate a qualified veterinarian before bringing an animal home.

Legal requirements

Some species and breeds are subject to regulation. Check applicable requirements, including documentation for birds, before enquiring.
